# The usual?

> @bartender now remembers his regulars: your recent orders, plus anything you ask him to write down with "@bartender remember". Say "@bartender forget me" and it's all gone.

[PR #719](https://github.com/mpiorowski/late-sh/pull/719)

![An open yellow ledger. The left page notes a patron who drinks Old Fashioneds, not too sweet, and wants decaf after 1am; the right page reads: noted. I'll keep that one behind the bar.](https://wikked.info/late-news/assets/bartender-memories.svg)

A good bartender knows your usual. Until now, ours only remembered what was still on screen: once your last order scrolled out of the room's recent chat, you were a stranger again.

Not anymore. [PR #719](https://github.com/mpiorowski/late-sh/pull/719) merged on October 21 and gives `@bartender` a ledger. He keeps a few notes on each patron and checks them the next time you talk to him. Your usual drink, your running joke, the game you keep losing at: he can pick up where you left off, even a week later.

## Ask him to write it down

The surest way into the ledger is to ask. Start a message with `@bartender remember`, then the thing:

```text
@bartender remember I take my coffee black
@bartender, remember: Old Fashioneds, never too sweet
@bartender remember my cat is named Segfault
```

A remember request only writes it down. **It never orders, pours, or charges you**, so you don't have to phrase it as an order or worry about getting a drink you didn't ask for. He answers with a quick line like “noted. I'll keep that one behind the bar.” Even if you've been chatting his ear off and he's ignoring you for a minute, the note still goes in the ledger.

Ask in a public room. In a DM or private room he'll tell you he only keeps the ledger out at the bar, because what he remembers can come up in whichever room he answers next.

## He also remembers your recent orders

Without being asked, he keeps your recent exchanges from public rooms: what you ordered, what he said back, and whatever you added in the next few seconds. That last part catches the “thanks!” and the “actually, make it a double.” He only keeps exchanges he actually answered. Nothing from DMs or private rooms.

## Room for sixteen

He keeps up to **sixteen notes per patron**. Your **eight newest remember requests** are kept ahead of everything else, and the remaining slots go to the most recent notes. So the things you explicitly asked him to remember don't get pushed out by a busy night of ordering.

The notes are copies, so they stay put even when the original chat messages are deleted or scroll away. They only go when they're pushed out by newer ones, when you say “forget me”, or when you delete your account.

## Notes, not orders

What's in the ledger shapes how he treats you, not what he charges. He'll use it for hospitality and drink choices, but a note can't place an order or talk him out of the house rules. When two notes disagree, the newer one wins.

## Changed your mind? Forget it.

Want a clean slate? Say exactly this:

```text
@bartender forget me
```

Everything he remembers about you is wiped, including an order he was still in the middle of noting down. Something like “please forget me” is just talk, so you won't wipe the ledger by accident. It doesn't delete what you've said in the room, though. Chat history is the room's, not his.

## Tipsy-proof

Had a few? Tipsiness can slur what you type, but never a remember request or “forget me”. However many drinks in, what you asked him to remember goes in the ledger exactly as you typed it.

## Not drinking?

One preference gets extra care. If he knows you don't drink alcohol, he'll pour you something [non-intoxicating](https://wikked.info/late-news/posts/non-intoxicating-drinks/) unless your current order explicitly asks for the hard stuff. Ordering “the usual” shouldn't get you tipsy by accident.

Pull up a stool, tell him your usual, and see if he remembers it next time.
